Empathy: more than feeling sorry

Empathy is often misunderstood.

Empathy does not mean:

  • agreeing with everyone
  • feeling pity
  • excusing harmful behavior

Empathy means:

Trying to understand someone else’s feelings, situation, and perspective — even when you disagree.

Empathy vs. Sympathy (expanded)

Why empathy improves leadership decisions

Empathy helps leaders:

  • see hidden problems
  • avoid unnecessary punishment
  • create solutions people accept
  • reduce resistance and resentment

Empathy does not remove authority — it strengthens it.
