Why emotions hijack speech

Strong emotions make the brain:

  • react faster than it thinks
  • focus on winning, not understanding
  • exaggerate problems

Under emotional stress, words become sharp or careless.

Reason protects dignity

Reason does not erase emotion.
Reason guides emotion.

A leader asks:

  • “What am I feeling?”
  • “Why am I feeling this?”
  • “What response reflects my values?”

This process prevents regret.

Choosing response over reaction

Reaction is automatic.
Response is intentional.

Leadership grows when students learn to pause between feeling and speaking.
